Launched in 1997, the Brooklyn Head Start program is a center-based, full day program designed to enhance the social competence of 3-5 year olds from low income families. The Head Start program serves 71 children and families residing in the Williamsburg and neighboring Bushwick communities. The program provides a comprehensive child development program to meet the children’s educational, emotional, social, health and nutritional needs.

The program targets parents who are required to participate in welfare-to-work programs and helps them develop job-related skills by offering them opportunities to work as volunteers in the center. The Head Start program has been instrumental in providing early education opportunities to children who are at high risk of experiencing poor developmental outcomes due to the multiple socio-economic stressors impacting their families.
